Sinopsis

In 2013, a group of film students in Bogotá embarked on the production of the documentary “Imaginarios, el goce de lo simple” (“Imaginaries: the joy of the simple”). What began as an unambitious student project, almost without purpose, turned into a deeper reflection on the country’s identity and its peculiar relationship with happiness.

“The Joyful Lightness of Colombianness” rescues that unseen behind-the-scenes footage shot in the editing room. Weaving this archival material together with AI-generated animations, the film builds an audiovisual collage in which reality and fantasy blur. Through drunken conversations, trivial arguments and moments of genuine introspection, we witness these young aspiring filmmakers trying to understand and capture that most distinctively Colombian trait: the ability to find joy and lightness in the midst of the most brutal and violent contexts.

Their reflections — contradictory, superfluous and often inconclusive — form a generational portrait of young creators caught between the cultural heritage of their country and their more global artistic aspirations, with an eye turned toward the future.

What emerges is a paradoxical testimony that points to a kind of happiness that is banal, meaningful, empty, efficient, incomplete and satisfying, all at once. A happiness that, as the “metadocumentary” itself suggests, may be the very essence of Colombianness, and that is expressed in the capacity to turn everyday brutality into a reason for joy, and to find lightness in the midst of the gravest historical weight.

“The Joyful Lightness of Colombianness” presents itself as the first work of “tropical psychotic postexistentialism”: an aesthetic movement that, by mixing formats, genres, timelines and states of consciousness, immerses us in a post-realist experience in which documented reality, the characters’ intoxication and the AI-made animations fuse to create new aesthetic and narrative experiences.

In times when the pursuit of happiness has become a categorical imperative, this “metadocumentary” (a documentary about a documentary) offers an honest look at what it means to be happy in an increasingly incomprehensible, artificial and broken world. And it does so from an anachronistic vision of the past.

Nota del director

Some films aren’t decided or planned — they simply emerge.

In 2013, with a group of classmates from my university in Bogotá, we shot a documentary titled “Imaginarios, el goce de lo simple”, about happiness as seen through the eyes of children from the Colombian countryside. It was a student project, without much ambition, but it marked us more than we realized at the time. When we came back to the editing room to put it together, we decided to set up a camera and talk about what we were going through. Half-joking, half-serious, we ended up filming ourselves — drunk, contradictory, foolish, pretending to debate important matters — while we tried to understand what exactly we had gone looking for out there.

I stored that footage away and left the country. For more than a decade I lived in different parts of the world. One day, in Barcelona, I opened an old hard drive and came across the archive footage again. I realized there was something in it that had lingered, something worth telling. The question that kept turning over in my head was this: what is Colombianness? Not the Colombianness of tourism campaigns or of the grim stereotypes exported abroad, but that other one — the one that shows up in the joke told in the face of violence, in the party that coexists with brutality, in the insistence on celebrating while living through tragedy. I decided I didn’t want to answer it in any conventional way. So I tried artificial intelligence.

In the film, the operation of the AI becomes a kind of outside eye that tries to understand us (to understand something about Colombianness) and that fails in ways that turn out, at times, to be more revealing than any success. Every image it generates, every interpretation it proposes, lays bare something that defines us as a country, and that has to do with a kind of warmth without logic, a humor born out of celebrating the simple fact of existing in spite of everyday atrocities, a lightness that has to do with enduring, and being happy, no matter what. That, in a very broken and precarious way, is this metadocumentary.
