Imaginarios, the Joy of Simplicity

Recovered film archives explore the dreams and fantasies of students at a school in rural Colombia in the year 2013, before the rise of social media, influencers, and widespread electricity.

As a filmmaker, I have always been fascinated by the stories that emerge from the intersection of time, memory, and place. This documentary was born from an archival rediscovery, a journey back to 2013, when as young documentarians we ventured to film a project in Guateque, Colombia, to document the dreams and aspirations of students at a local school. Revisiting this material eleven years later has been a profoundly transformative experience, both personally and artistically.

In 2013, these students were navigating a world on the brink of a technological transformation, where digital connectivity was only just beginning to seep into the rhythm of daily life. Their words and perspectives captured a fleeting moment in time, before the overwhelming influence of screens and social media became a defining feature of our contemporary culture. For me, this project is not just about looking back; it is about holding a mirror up to our present and posing urgent questions about how we define happiness and fulfillment in an increasingly technological world.

At the heart of this film is the story of Michael, a boy who embodies the beauty of simplicity. His life, stripped of today’s comforts, radiates a pure and contagious happiness. Michael’s story challenged me to reflect on my own values and assumptions about what it means to lead a meaningful life. His presence on screen is a powerful reminder that joy is often found in the bare essentials, in the bonds we create and the moments we share.

This documentary is also a meditation on the contrasts between urban and rural experiences, between the accelerated demands of city life and the quiet resilience of the countryside. By juxtaposing these realities, I hope to open a space for reflection: about what we gain, but also about what we lose, when we prioritize progress and technology over simplicity and human connection.

Ultimately, this film is an invitation. It invites viewers to pause, reflect, and question. It challenges us to rethink our definitions of happiness and to reconnect with what truly matters: our relationships, our communities, and our capacity to find meaning in the small, unnoticed moments of everyday life.

As a director, my hope is that this documentary sparks conversations: about technology, about values, and about the kind of future we want to build. But beyond that, I hope it inspires viewers to embrace the joy of simplicity and to find beauty in the stories of those, like Michael, who remind us of the power of a less technological, more human life experience.
